At least 9 people were killed in a shooting at a school in the Russian city of Kazan. Among them 7 pupils and 1 teacher. A 19-year-old suspect has been arrested. On the internet, he imagined himself “God”, who “will subdue and kill everyone”.
At around 9 a.m. local time, there was an explosion in the school. The true cause of this is not yet clear. Moments later, a young man entered the school and started shooting. At least 9 people were killed.
Among them are at least 7 students, 4 boys and 3 girls, Rustam Minnichanov announced, the president of the Russian republic of Tatarstan, of which Kazan is the capital. 2 adults were also killed, 1 of them a teacher. The death toll could still rise; several people are in hospital, including in the intensive care unit.
Russian police have arrested a suspect. It is a 19-year-old ex-student of the school. Shortly before, he indicated on his social media channel on Telegram that he wanted to carry out an attack. He also posted a photo with a mask online, calling himself God. “I will subdue and kill everyone,” he added. The young man had a gun license. His motive is not yet clear.
Initially, it was said by Russian media that the police had shot a second gunman, but that turns out to be wrong.
Part of the school was evacuated. Security measures were also tightened up in other schools in Kazan. Kazan is a city of more than 1.2 million inhabitants. Mainly Tatars live there, many of whom are (moderate) Muslims.
School shootings are not very common in Russia, although there have been some fatal attacks on schools in recent years. The perpetrators were primarily students.
