Ukraine says Russia extradited 76 prisoners to the country on Tuesday as part of a prisoner swap. According to Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk, 60 soldiers and 16 civilians are involved.
Vereshchuk did not disclose how many Russian detainees Ukraine has transferred to Russia as part of the exchange.
It was the fifth time since the beginning of the war in Ukraine that the two countries had exchanged prisoners. Last week, Kyiv reported that it had returned 30 prisoners of war to Russia following an order from Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky.
Zelensky has offered to trade Ukrainian businessman and politician Viktor Medvedchuk for Ukrainians imprisoned by Russia. Medvedchuk is an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Ukrainian government arrested the pro-Russian politician trying to get out of house arrest. Kyiv’s security services broadcast a video on Monday in which Medvedchuk asks Putin to allow the evacuations of civilians and troops from the besieged port city of Mariupol in exchange for his release.
