Russian President Vladimir Putin has already congratulated Donald Trump on his second term as US president hours before Trump’s inauguration in Washington.
He did this during a meeting of the Russian Security Council.
Putin also said that Russia is open to dialogue with the new US administration about Ukraine and nuclear weapons.
The Russian president stated that he would fight for Russia’s interests and hope for lasting peace instead of a short ceasefire in Ukraine. The end of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is not in sight.
Almost three years after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the US is still Ukraine’s most important ally. It is unclear what American support will look like with Trump in power. During his election campaign, he said he would end the war in Ukraine “within 24 hours”.
