The summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will take place on June 12 in Singapore. That’s what Trump announced on Thursday through Twitter. The most prominent topic on the agenda is the North Korean nuclear weapons program.
Trump already announced last month that he had taken a date, but then kept it to himself. There was a stir for a while about the location. Mongolia, Sweden, Singapore and the border area between North and South Korea (also known as the demilitarised zone) were mentioned as possible locations for the summit.
Eventually, it went between the demilitarised zone and Singapore. When Trump said on Wednesday that this first option was off the table, it already seemed that the meeting would take place in Singapore. That is now formally confirmed. “We will both try to make it an extraordinary moment for world peace,” said Trump.
Singapore acts as a neutral ground for the summit between Kim and Trump. The country is one of the few nations that maintain diplomatic relations with both the US and North Korea.
