American Approval for Breath Test That Can Detect Corona

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted emergency approval for a corona test that can detect corona infection through the breath.

The device is about the size of a piece of hand luggage, and the FDA said Thursday (local time). The test can be administered by doctors or in hospitals.

To perform the test, you have to blow into a kind of tube. The test provides results in less than three minutes after a chemical analysis of the inspired air.

In a study of 2,400 participants, the test achieved 91 percent on sensitivity, or correct identification of positive samples, and 99 percent on specificity, or correct identification of negative samples.

Similar scores were obtained in a follow-up study focusing on the omikron variant.
