The British corona variant was first identified in the Chinese capital of Beijing on Wednesday.
The variant has been identified in two residents of the Daxing district, south of Beijing, according to local health authorities. 103 new corona infections were reported across China on Wednesday, seven of which were in Beijing.
Earlier in the day, it was announced that all 1.6 million residents of the Daxing district would not be allowed to leave the capital unless they have permission from the local authorities and can show a negative corona test.
Residents of five neighbourhoods in Daxing go into complete lockdown and must stay indoors.
China got the coronavirus under national control last year. In the case of new infections, the Chinese local authorities immediately proceed to massive testing and a local lockdown.
On Monday, 3 million Chinese in northeastern Jilin province went into lockdown after an itinerant businessman infected 100 people in the region.
