British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has given a positive year-end message despite the rapidly increasing corona infections in his country. The UK is in much better shape now than it was at the end of 2020, he argued in a video message circulated via Twitter.
Johnson acknowledged in the video that there might be concerns about the new omicron variant and the rising number of hospital admissions. Nevertheless, according to the head of government, things are definitely going in the right direction with the United Kingdom. “This country has the fastest growing economy in the G7,” he told his compatriots. “And there are more people in jobs now than before the start of the pandemic.”
The prime minister also praised Britain’s willingness to be widely vaccinated against the coronavirus. According to the government, all adults in England have now been offered a booster. “It’s thanks to this massive national effort that we can still celebrate tonight,” Johnson said.
The start of 2022 cannot be celebrated equally exuberantly everywhere in the United Kingdom. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have stricter rules than England, where most Britons live. Capital London has cancelled planned festivities in Trafalgar Square as a precaution.
Johnson asked people in his year-end speech to abide by the rules when they are in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He also gave his compatriots who have not been fully vaccinated a good resolution for the new year. “Get that shot,” said the prime minister. According to him, that is a good intention “much easier than losing weight or keeping a diary”.
