Energy Company RWE Wants to Accelerate the Phase-Out of Coal, But Not Yet

Energy company RWE wants to bring forward the phase-out of coal by eight years to 2030.

At the same time, two of the company’s coal-fired power plants will remain in operation until spring 2024, when it had previously been agreed that they would close at the end of the year.

This is laid down in an outline agreement between RWE and the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Economic Affairs of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The coal-fired power stations will remain open longer to enhance energy security. The coal-fired power stations also ensure that less natural gas is needed to generate energy.

The fact that more lignite will be used for energy generation shortly does not mean that more will be invested in this fossil fuel, according to the plans.
