European Commissioner Places 19 Big Tech Companies Under Strict EU Legislation

European Commissioner Thierry Breton has announced the names of seventeen massive online platforms and two search engines that will fall under the new European legislation for digital services.

Big tech companies such as Amazon, Apple, Google, TikTok, Twitter and Wikipedia must comply with the European Digital Services Act (DSA) rules within four months and partly adjust their business model.

The nineteen selected by the European Commission count at least 45 million monthly active users. The search engines are Bing and Google Search.

The DSA regulation should protect adult internet users, especially minors, against harmful content, advertising and privacy violations. In addition, the legislation makes it easier to deal with companies that proliferate child pornography, inflammatory and hateful material or disinformation.

Supervision is becoming tighter, and avoiding punishment is becoming more challenging. Therefore, the nineteen major internet companies must also give users more choices and better information.
