The music app is the latest in the list of Google apps that will be disposed of after a few years. Google redirects users to YouTube Music.
Google Play Music was created in 2011 as a sort of iTunes competitor. Users could use the app to store their own tracks in the cloud or to buy new music from the online store.
In 2013, a streaming service was also added with a monthly subscription that gave access to the entire catalogue, such as with Spotify.
The app comes standard with Android and is therefore on many phones, but the question is whether many people also opened that app in recent years.
YouTube Music was announced in 2018, and it immediately became clear that the days of Google Play Music were numbered.
Google Play Music users will be allowed to download their full library along with their recommendations from the service’s site via the ‘Manage your data’ button.
