Hamilton Learns A Lot About His Competitor Behind Verstappen

Lewis Hamilton says he has learned a lot about Max Verstappen in the Grand Prix of Spain. “Perhaps more than in all previous races put together,” said the British Mercedes driver.

Hamilton mainly drove behind his Dutch rival at the Barcelona circuit but was eventually on the podium’s highest step.

“It was a perfect day. I learned a lot about Max. In that respect, it was also a good race”, said the seven-time world champion, who is being challenged more than ever by the Dutchman this season. “When you drive on the track, you see other things. I have followed him relatively closely in this race and learned so much about his car and how he uses it.”

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff also spoke of an instructive day. “If you can follow the other car and the other driver so closely, you learn more. And that can be an advantage”, said Wolff, without mentioning the names of Verstappen and his racing team Red Bull.

The Dutch leader of Red Bull took first place at the start from Hamilton, who had left pole position. Verstappen was in the lead for most of the race but was passed in the final phase by the Brit, who had a sophisticated tire strategy. Verstappen’s deficit on Hamilton in the World Cup standings rose to 14 points after four of the 23 races.
