Italy wants to extend the state of emergency to October 31 due to the corona crisis. The government has asked parliament to agree to the extension, Italian media report.
The state of emergency was declared for six months at the end of January. That happened after the coronavirus had surfaced in the country.
The state of emergency makes money available for special measures and gives regional authorities more powers to intervene.
For a time, Italy was the European hotbed of the corona outbreak with crowded hospitals and massive mortality, especially in places in the north.
To date, the country has had over 35,100 corona deaths. Of the more than 246,000 people who became infected, almost 200,000 have recovered.
