Lockdown Already Costs the German Tourism Industry 24 Billion Euros

The lockdown in Germany to contain the spread of the coronavirus cost the tourist industry in the country in March and April around 24 billion euros.

The German sector branch association DTV calculated this. The president of the association Reinhard Meyer called for immediate state aid for the smallest companies in the industry.

Meyer said he expects a gradual return to normal.

He added that a resumption of outings would be possible in late summer at the earliest. Strict rules would then be required to prevent the inland beaches from becoming overcrowded.

“We have to be very disciplined,” he told media company RND.

Meyer also warned that if vacationers were not disciplined when tourism regains steam, it could jeopardize the future of the sector.
