More than 600,000 homes were without power on Wednesday in the northeastern United States, which was hit by a severe coastal storm. Locally wind gusts of 140 kilometres per hour are reached.
This was announced by the US National Weather Service (NWS).
The state of Massachusetts was the hardest hit, with 466,000 homes without power at 8 a.m. local time (2 p.m. GMT). According to two weather officials, the situation is “dangerous” and risks “hurricane-like gusts”.
The gusts have already uprooted many trees. As a result, the weather service in Boston, the largest city in the state, has warned residents against moving.
The state of Rhode Island was also hit hard, with 91,000 homes without power. However, the situation should stabilize in the next few hours, according to the NWS.
