New Ebola Case Identified in Eastern Congo

A new Ebola virus infection has been confirmed in the eastern city of Beni in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Genetic research shows the new case is linked to the 2018-2020 outbreak in North Kivu province, the National Institute of Biomedical Research of Congo reports.

On Saturday, Congolese health authorities were investigating a suspected illness and death in the country’s east. It concerned a 46-year-old woman who may have succumbed to the feared virus in Beni last week.

Located in North Kivu, Beni was one of the centers of a major Ebola outbreak that claimed nearly 2,300 lives between 2018 and 2020. Fourteen outbreaks have been recorded in Congo since 1976. The last of these killed five in the northwest was contained last month.

People can contract the Ebola virus, among other things, by eating infected animals that live in Congo’s tropical jungles. Ebola is transmitted between people through physical contact and often causes high fever, muscle and headache, diarrhea, and internal bleeding.
