President Trump Allows Oil Drilling in Alaska Nature Reserve

US President Donald Trump is going to allow oil drilling in a large nature reserve in the state of Alaska. The drillings are highly controversial.

For decades no oil and gas extraction was allowed in the vast area, almost twice the size of the Netherlands.

The Department of the Interior’s approval of the drilling program paves the way for the auction of oil and gas rights by the end of 2020.

According to The Wall Street Journal, this decision is difficult to reverse, even if the Republican president were to losing to his Democratic challenger Biden in the November 3 presidential election.

Environmentalists and groups of indigenous residents of the area have been trying to stop the drilling in recent years after legislation passed in 2017 that opened the area to oil and gas explorations.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge nature reserve includes polar bears, wolves, eagles and many migratory birds.
