British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has asked Iranian President Hassan Rohani in a telephone conversation to release all people detained in Iran and who have British nationality and Iranian nationals.
The request appears to be primarily aimed at the British-Iranian Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe. She has served a five-year prison sentence in Iran and was released last weekend. However, she cannot leave the country because she now has to go to a judge for another charge next Sunday.
Zaghari-Ratcliffe, 42, was arrested on a family visit in Iran in April 2016 and convicted of attempts to overthrow the regime through propaganda.
She had been a journalist and had been living in England since 2007 and often returned to Tehran for a family with her Iranian passport. After her conviction, she was placed under house arrest in Tehran in March last year because of the coronavirus. That was lifted at the beginning of this week.
Iranians who emigrate and change nationality often have to use their Iranian passport to return and are a vulnerable target for prosecutors who want to use all possible means to combat Western influence.
