Privacy Group Files Complaint Against TikTok and Other Chinese Apps

Privacy campaign group NOYB has filed complaints against six Chinese companies, including TikTok, in several European countries.

The Vienna non-profit organization accuses the companies of “unlawfully” sending Europeans’ data to China. In addition to TikTok, the companies involved include AliExpress, SHEIN, Temu, WeChat, and Xiaomi. The complaints were filed in Austria, Belgium, Greece, Italy, and the Netherlands.

NOYB, which stands for ‘none of your business’, is an initiative of the Austrian lawyer and privacy activist Max Schrems, among others.

The organization aims to launch strategic lawsuits and media initiatives in support of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This is the first time NOYB has taken such action against Chinese companies.

NOYB previously filed several lawsuits against American technology companies such as Meta and Google. These cases often led to regulators’ actions to address violations of the GDPR, which is intended to make it easier for people to determine how companies use their personal information.
