Russian President Vladimir Putin claims the West is trying to kill Russian journalists. On Russian state television, Putin said the FSB security agency recently thwarted an assassination attempt on a prominent television journalist without providing evidence.
According to the Russian news agency Interfax, it was Vladimir Solovyov.
“This morning, the Federal Security Service terminated the activities of a terrorist group that planned to attack and kill a famous Russian TV journalist,” Putin said. “They have turned to terror, to preparing to kill our journalists.”
According to Interfax, Putin referred to a group that wanted to kill Solovyov at the behest of Ukrainian spies. The Russian authorities are said to have detained some members of the group.
Putin said he sees the foiled assassination attempt as evidence that the West is trying to destroy Russia from within but that such attempts would fail. He said the US CIA is in charge of attempts to undermine Russia and is advising the Ukrainian government.
Putin also said that the West is using foreign media organizations and social media to concoct provocations against the Russian armed forces. Such actions must end, he said.
