Russia will stop the activities of media giant Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp if it allows calls to kill Russia’s president or other officials and military personnel.
In addition, the Moscow Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into inciting the killing of Russians and speaks of terrorist activities.
According to Meta, hate speech is not allowed on the sites. But the company would now make an exception for calls to kill Russians, most notably President Vladimir Putin, his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko and military and government officials from Russia.
A spokesman for Meta has confirmed media reports that it will temporarily tolerate calls like “death to the Russian attackers”, but not calls to kill Russian civilians. The UN human rights organization calls the move by the media company “worrying”.
The Russian embassy in the United States reacted furiously to Meta’s announcement and called on authorities to take measures against “the extremist activities” of the company. Russia already blocked access to social media such as Facebook and Twitter last week, after Facebook announced it would block Russian media in European countries.
