South Africa Starts the Vaccination Campaign

In South Africa, the national vaccination campaign has started in a hospital in Cape Town. A nurse was the first to receive a vaccine from Johnson & Johnson.

The start of the vaccination program was delayed because the authorities previously decided not to use the stored vaccines made by the University of Oxford and the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca.

According to the authorities, they were probably less suitable for fighting a South African variant of the feared virus.

The country of sixty million inhabitants has been diagnosed with the virus, almost one and a half million times. About 1.4 million people have not become ill or have recovered.

The death of more than 48,000 people in South Africa is mainly attributed to the virus. There are currently more than 500 corona patients in a worrying condition in hospitals.
