Russian President Vladimir Putin has to wait longer for a judgment by the Russian people about his aim to stay in power even longer.
The referendum of April 22 has been cancelled due to the corona crisis.
Putin himself announced the postponement in a televised speech. He did not yet set a new date for the consultation, during which the people can speak out about the radical change in the constitution.
The President also announced a series of measures to combat the coronavirus. For example, there will be no work for the next week. The speech follows the strongest increase in the number of infections in Russia.
In the capital Moscow, all outdoor events had already been cancelled. For example, theatres and sports clubs are also closed.
As of Thursday, more than 1.9 million people over 65 must stay at home. The armed forces were instructed to prepare themselves adequately to help fight the virus.
Thursday is 20 years since Putin was elected President. He was Prime Minister from 2008 to 2012 and then became President again.
