The United States exceeded the 10 million confirmed corona infections mark on Monday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Worldwide there are more than 50 million since the virus spread around the globe since the beginning of this year.
India is second in the ranking with more than 8.5 million infections and Brazil (5.6 million) third. France (1.8 million) and Russia (1.3 million) followed at a distance.
The US also leads the ranking in terms of deaths. Over a thousand deaths have occurred every day in the last few days. The total stands at just under 238,000, followed by Brazil with over 162,000.
The severity of the US epidemic made the approach a major topic in the presidential election. President-to-be Joe Biden said Monday he would do everything he could to reverse the pandemic when he was sworn in in January.
He warned that the US is facing a very dark winter and called on Americans to wear a face mask.
