Trump Calls for An End to Violence in Northwest Syria

US President Donald Trump on Thursday called on Russia, Syria and Iran to stop the violence in the Syrian province of Idlib.

Tens of thousands of people fled their homes there because of the intense bombing by the Syrian regime and its allies.

“Russia, Syria and Iran kill thousands of civilians,” tweeted Trump on Thursday. “Do not do it!” Idlib is the last major opposition stronghold not in the hands of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Since the start of the violent bombing on December 16, at least eighty civilians have died in the northwestern province. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, more than 40,000 people have also been displaced.

Turkey already called on Tuesday to “immediately end” the attacks. Trump praised those efforts by the government in Ankara. “Turkey is working hard to stop this massacre”.

Trump withdrew US troops from the area in October. The violence has since flared up.
