Former US President Donald Trump refuses to hand over his tax returns to parliament, although the judiciary believes he should.
Trump lawyers say in newly released court documents that the Justice Department is wrong and the judgment is illegal.
The ministry decided on Friday to reverse a decision from 2019. It was then decided that Trump did not have to provide the documents. However, a committee of the House of Representatives, the lower house of the American parliament, had again requested the declarations.
Justice this time decided that there were “sufficient reasons” to comply with the request.
The committee wants to see the documents to see whether the US tax authorities adequately check presidents’ tax returns and whether policy changes are needed. However, Trump’s lawyers believe the request will not affect all presidents but will only affect Trump.
Trump is the first US president in 40 years to not release his tax returns. He has long resisted requests to do so.
