Turkey Denies Attack on Civilians in Northern Iraq

Turkey denies responsibility for the attack on civilians in northern Iraq’s Dohuk province. “Terrorists” are said to have carried out the attack on Wednesday that left nine dead and 23 injured, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said.

Iraq claims that Turkey is behind it and has summoned the Turkish ambassador to Baghdad. The country to recall its chargé d’affaires in Ankara after the “blatant violation” of Iraqi sovereignty.

Cavusoglu says Iraqi authorities should not fall into this “trap.” He said that Turkish military operations in Iraq have always been directed against the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Turkey regularly carries out airstrikes in northern Iraq and has sent commandos to support its offensive as part of a long-running campaign in Iraq and Syria against the Kurdish PKK and the Syrian-Kurdish YPG militia. Ankara considers both terrorist groups.

“The whole world knows that we would never attack civilians,” Cavusoglu said. “We can work together to lift the curtain of fog,” he reaches out to Iraq.

The United Nations envoy to Iraq and the United States has condemned the attack and called for an investigation.
