Two Doses of Each EU Approved Vaccine Protect Against Delta Variant

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) says that when given a full vaccination schedule, each of the four corona vaccines approved in Europe appears to protect against the circulating variants of the virus, including the more contagious Delta variant.

“The data we obtain from concrete trials and studies show that two doses of the vaccines protect against the Delta variant,” said Marco Cavaleri, the main responsible for vaccination strategy at the EMA, during a press conference.

The WHO warned this afternoon that the number of corona infections in Europe is starting to rise again after a 10-week decline. The main reason is the faster spread of the Delta variant. “We are aware of the concerns about that variant,” said Cavaleri.

“At the moment, it seems that all four vaccines approved in the EU protect against all variants currently circulating in Europe, including the Delta variant.” This concerns the vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson the latter requiring only one dose for a complete vaccination schedule.

The EMA asks that the producers continue to monitor the variants, from which it expects new ones to appear, and investigate whether their vaccines provide sufficient protection against them.

The studies on the efficacy of all vaccines continue, as do those on the rare side effects that have occurred so far.
