Two Men Hanged in Iran for Blasphemy

Two men have been executed in Iran on charges of blasphemy. This was announced online by the Mizan Justice Department on Monday.

According to a state news site, Irna, the men were hanged in the early morning.

The Iranian court accused the two men, Jusuf Mehrdad and Sadrollah Faseri Sare, of insulting Islam and the prophet in chat groups, among other things.

The two also had contact with anti-religious networks. Justice Department Mizan also says that a video was found on Mehrdad’s mobile phone about a Koran burning.

Human rights activists have been critical of Iran’s implementation of the death penalty for years.

Executions for blasphemy, however, are sporadic in the Shiite-led country. Human rights organization Hengaw reported a few days ago that Iran has already executed 199 prisoners this year.
