UK: Quick Easing If Oxford Vaccine Rollout Goes Well

If the corona vaccine from Swedish-British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford can be successfully rolled out, restrictive measures in the UK could be relaxed, UK Cabinet Secretary Michael Gove said.

According to an insider, the British medicine watchdog could approve the so-called Oxford vaccine this week.

Three weeks ago, the British authorities gave the green light to market the vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech, which has now been administered to more than 600,000 Britons. However, a major setback for Britain recently came in the form of a new mutated variant of the coronavirus, which is much more contagious.

The number of new infections per day has increased rapidly in the United Kingdom since then.

Approval of the Oxford vaccine could accelerate the UK vaccination program because it is much easier to transport and store than the Pfizer vaccine. Because it is also much cheaper to produce, such approval would also be a boost for developing countries. In addition, the European Union and the United States have already signed the purchase of large doses of the Oxford vaccine.

According to Minister Gove, approval of the Oxford vaccine for the UK market would mean a “significant increase” in the number of vaccines available. have made life so difficult for many, “Gove told Sky News.

In the UK, the coronavirus has so far been diagnosed in nearly 2.3 million people. More than 70,000 Covid-19 patients have died.
