Ukraine Strengthens Borders With Belarus for Fear of Attack

Ukraine is in the process of strengthening its borders with Belarus. In addition, Vladimir Putin’s visit to his colleague Alexander Lukashenko in Minsk has fueled fears in Ukraine that an attack could come from Belarus.

Deputy Interior Minister Yevhen Yenin told the BBC that Ukraine would reinforce the Belarusian border with military forces and munitions. It would respond to the possible plans that Putin and Lukashenko agreed on Monday during a visit by the Russian president to Minsk.

Belarus borders both Russia and Ukraine. The Ukrainians now fear that Russia is planning a new invasion through Belarus. Lukashenko previously indicated that he did not want to become directly involved in the war, but whether that will remain the case. The Russian Ministry of Defense has already announced that Russian troops stationed in Belarus will conduct joint military exercises with the Belarusian army.

Putin would make an important announcement in the next few days. As pressure for Belarusian involvement in the conflict seems to be mounting, rumours are rising that his message might have something to do with it. However, according to Kremlin spokesman Dimitri Peskov, that is “total nonsense”.
