UN Human Rights Chief to Visit Xinjiang in May

UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet will visit China in May and will then go to the Xinjiang region, among other places.

Agreements have been made with the Asian country for the visit that was announced earlier this year.

A group of UN officials will travel to China next month to prepare, Bachelet told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. China is accused of widespread human rights violations of Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in Xinjiang.

The United Nations has wanted to visit the region for some time but has not yet had permission from Beijing.

In late January, the Chinese foreign ministry said that Bachelet was welcome for a “friendly” visit. However, it is not immediately clear what agreements have been made about her visit.
