The United States and Russia have exchanged prisoners in Abu Dhabi, reports The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
The American newspaper writes that Moscow has released the American-Russian Ksenia Karelina in exchange for the Russian-German Arthur Petrov.
Karelina was sentenced to twelve years in prison last year for donating just over 50 dollars to an American organisation that provides humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Her lawyer confirms the release through an exchange.
Petrov was arrested in Cyprus in 2023 at the request of the American government on suspicion of smuggling technology with military applications to Russia.
The exchange takes place as the two countries try to strengthen mutual ties after the deterioration caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On Thursday, Russian and American delegations will discuss restoring the activities of their diplomatic missions in Turkey.
