Volcano Wolf Erupts on Galapagos Island

In one of the Galapagos Islands, the Wolf volcano has erupted, Ecuadorian authorities reported Friday, without specifying whether the rare population of pink iguanas living there is threatened.

The previous eruption occurred seven years ago.

The Quito Geophysical Institute signalled that around 12:20 a.m. local time on Friday, an eruption was detected at the 1,707-meter volcano on Isabela Island. A cloud of gas and ash was ejected nearly 3,800 meters above sea level.

The previous eruption of the highest volcano in the Galapagos Islands, a nature reserve with a unique fauna and flora a thousand kilometres off the coast of Ecuador, dates back to 2015, after 33 years of inactivity.

It did not harm the rare fauna of Isabela, where an inventory of a native species of pink iguanas (Conolophus marthae) was made in 2009.

An expedition last year counted 211 specimens of the species, which is listed as endangered by the conservation association IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
