Russian missiles have hit several residential buildings in the centre of Kyiv. At least, that is what the local Ukrainian authorities say. Missile strikes have also been reported in other cities.
The attacks came days after the Russian army withdrew from Kherson in the country’s south.
Air raid sirens have sounded all over the country, and missile strikes are now also being reported. Local authorities in the cities of Lviv, close to the Polish border in western Ukraine, and Kharkiv, among others, speak of Russian attacks. The mayor of the capital Kyiv says that residential homes have been hit.
Footage shared by the cabinet of Ukrainian President Zelensky shows a building on fire. There are currently no casualties, and rescue teams are on site en masse. Power installations were also hit in several places, and the power went out. The authorities say that Ukrainian air defences have also been able to intercept missiles.
The attacks come days after the Russian army withdrew from the city of Kherson, an embarrassing defeat for the Russians. At the moment, world leaders are also meeting in Indonesia for the summit of the G20, the meeting of the world’s 20 most important economies. There the Russian war against Ukraine was condemned.
According to the British public broadcaster BBC, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov had just left Indonesia when reports of the attacks on Ukraine came in.
