WHO Chief Officially Nominated for Second Term

The reappointment of the World Health Organization WHO CEO seems a step closer. In a private meeting, WHO leaders approved the nomination of Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The incumbent boss is the only candidate. In May, all 194 member states will vote on his nomination.

Tedros has been at the helm of the WHO since 2017. The former Ethiopian minister of health and later foreign affairs has been praised for his leadership during the corona pandemic. For example, it went well in Africa that Tedros has always argued for a fair distribution of corona vaccines.

Ethiopia disagrees with the nomination. The CEO has criticized the situation in the Tigray region, where he comes from, several times. Rebels from this region are waging a civil war against the Ethiopian government. Millions of people are dependent on humanitarian aid because of that war.

Tedros accused the government earlier this month of withholding that aid. Ethiopia wants the CEO to be investigated in connection with misconduct, among other things. An envoy from the country tried to criticize Tedros in a speech at the WHO on Monday, but he was cut off.

In addition to the situation with his home country, the leadership of the CEO often caused a stir. For example, he had to apologize for last September for the misconduct of WHO personnel in Congo. Aid workers there committed sexual abuse between 2018 and 2020 during the fight against the Ebola virus.
