Worldwide 1500 Jobs Lost at Red Cross

At the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), 1500 jobs worldwide will disappear due to budget cuts. At least twenty of 350 offices worldwide are also closing.

The Red Cross says in a press release that it is taking measures to save costs. For example, financial commitments have not been met, and the organization is struggling with high costs, partly due to inflation. As a result, the ICRC started 2023 with a deficit of about 140 million Swiss francs (140 million euros).

The Red Cross also states that raising funds has become increasingly challenging, resulting in a shortage of aid in many crisis situations.

The organization wants to limit the number of employees who must leave as much as possible through a recruitment freeze and a “natural turnover” of employees. As a result, offices are mainly closed in areas where another Red Cross office or another humanitarian organization can take over the work.

The organization does not yet want to say which countries locations will be closed and jobs will be cut. As a result, how many people will no longer receive help or support is still unclear.
