Facebook parent company Meta Platforms is working on improved versions of its smart glasses and researching new wearables such as smartwatches and earphones with cameras.
According to Bloomberg, Mark Zuckerberg’s company may want to compete with, for example, Samsung’s smartwatches and Apple’s AirPods.
The wearables Bloomberg reports are part of an effort to reposition Meta as an “artificial intelligence innovator,” with AI technology to be more emphatically integrated into new products.
Social media has spent tens of billions on augmented and virtual reality innovation. Several versions of its headsets and glasses have also been released but have not caught on with the general public.
Extension
Meta has reportedly been planning to launch its smartwatch for some time but has repeatedly changed the details and priorities of the project. According to Bloomberg, the gadget has been “cancelled and revived multiple times.”
The Facebook parent company is reportedly considering releasing the smartwatch early this year. It is not ruled out that the watch will also become an extension of Meta’s smart glasses, such as operating that gadget or quickly viewing the photos you have taken with the glasses.
If Meta decides to also produce earphones for consumers, they will probably not come onto the market for a few years. Bloomberg reports that earphones with an integrated camera could be an alternative to smart glasses to a certain extent.
