British energy company National Grid claims Heathrow Airport had enough power to stay open on Friday.
The airport, the busiest in Europe, was closed most of the day due to a fire in a nearby transformer station.
General manager John Pettigrew told the Financial Times newspaper that power had remained available to Heathrow via two other substations. “There was no shortage of capacity at the substations. Each substation can supply enough power to Heathrow individually.”
Aviation authorities say the airport was closed because time was needed to switch to the other substations and carry out safety checks.
The British government has ordered an investigation into the airport closure in west London. There does not appear to be any malicious intent in the fire.
