ABC News: Australian PM Wants Exemption from Trump Levies

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has scheduled a meeting with US President Donald Trump now that he has announced plans for 25 percent import duties on steel and aluminium imports.

According to Australian ABC News, Albanese told parliament that his government would advocate for an exemption from these measures.

“I have scheduled a meeting with President Trump, and I will certainly keep the House and the Australian people informed after that meeting,” the prime minister said. “The Australians know that I will always stand up for them, and I will always stand up for Australia’s national interests.”

It will be the prime minister’s first meeting with Trump since a brief phone call to congratulate him on his election as president. The government in Canberra aims to repeat the diplomatic efforts that were successful in 2018.

At the time, Australia, along with Canada, Mexico, and the UK, was exempted from new US tariffs on steel and aluminium imports to the US.
