The US government has started firing thousands of civil servants in their probationary period, yet another step in reducing the national civil service.
It is not clear how many employees have been fired and how many still have to go. According to recent government data, more than 200,000 civil servants are on probation.
The New York Times newspaper reports that the HR department has advised government agencies to fire the majority.
There have been layoffs at the Department of Education, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the agency for small businesses, and the consumer organization, among others.
