China has successfully completed the first clinical trial of a technology that allows signals from the brain to control external devices, the Chinese newspaper Global Times reports.
This would make the country the second in the world, after the United States, to reach this stage in what has already been dubbed the brain implant race in the media.
Chinese researchers inserted an implant in a patient with tetraplegia in March. This is a condition in which all limbs are paralyzed. A few weeks after the operation, the patient was able to play racing games and chess on the computer, using only thoughts to control the operation.
Recent progress has also been reported in the US. A few days ago, Elon Musk’s startup Neuralink reported that it had used a brain implant to make a monkey see something that wasn’t physically there. According to the American company, this was a crucial step toward achieving the goal of helping blind people see.
