Microsoft 365 Gets Another Name

On various devices, the office software will now be called Microsoft 365 Copilot, a rebranding that aims to promote AI functions.

Whether you like it or not, you probably already know that Copilot is a thing at Microsoft. After extensive integration in Windows 11, a change to the Windows keyboard and the mention of ‘Copilot’ in every possible speech and blog from Microsoft over the past year and a half, Microsoft’s office software is also equipped with a Copilot appendix.

Copilot’s free version contains limited AI functionalities. In a paid version, these are much more extensive. However, in terms of content, the name change does little to change the software that bundles Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, among others.

Windows Latest, which noticed the name change, also discovered that the link to Office.com and microsoft365.com has changed to M365.cloud. Microsoft. That change was announced long ago but hasn’t been rolled out everywhere.

Old habit
This means that Microsoft is sticking to a tradition: once people get used to a brand name, they change that brand name. For example, the brand name ‘Surface’, today the name for the company’s tablets and laptops, was once intended for a kind of coffee table with a touch screen incorporated into it.

The once popular MSN became Windows Live Messenger (later absorbed into Skype, where it quietly died), the e-mail service Hotmail also became ‘Live’, and many more examples exist.

Microsoft 365 Copilot initially started as Microsoft Office. With the switch to an online suite, it became ‘Office 365’ in 2011. In 2022, the company renamed the office tools to Microsoft 365. In 2025, it will become Microsoft 365 Copilot. So, you now know that being a brand manager at Microsoft is more than a full-time job.
