TikTok is preparing to completely disable the popular video app for users in the United States this Sunday, the usually well-informed website The Information reports based on insiders.
In doing so, the social media platform would go further than a new law prescribes. That law would only ban new downloads of TikTok in the US, while the app will remain live for a while for existing users.
The US Supreme Court is considering the social media platform’s objections to a law requiring Chinese parent company ByteDance to sell its US operations. If ByteDance fails to do so, it could face a ban. The new law is set to go into effect on Sunday. New downloads will no longer be possible, and updates will become challenging.
Pop-up message
However, according to The Information, TikTok now plans to show people who open the app in the US a pop-up message redirecting them to a website with information about the ban. TikTok has about 170 million users in the US who would no longer have access to the platform.
