UN Chief Calls on Hamas to Resume Hostage Releases

UN chief António Guterres calls on Hamas to continue with the planned release of hostages next Saturday, a day after the group announced that it would temporarily suspend the releases due to Israeli violations of the ceasefire.

The secretary-general states that Hamas and Israel must adhere to the ceasefire and continue with “serious negotiations” for the second phase of the agreement.

“We must prevent at all costs a resumption of hostilities in Gaza, which would lead to a huge tragedy,” Guterres said in a statement.

The Palestinian group states that Israel is violating the ceasefire and that the country must adhere to its obligations. According to Hamas, the mediators must intervene. Similar accusations have been made the other way around.

Last month, Israel blocked the agreed return of displaced Palestinians to the northern Gaza Strip for days out of dissatisfaction.
