British Record for Electricity Production From Wind Turbines

UK wind power production will reach a record high in 2022. According to figures from the British grid operator National Grid, the share of wind energy in total electricity production was 26.8 percent last year, compared to 21.8 percent a year earlier.

However, gas-fired power stations remain the country’s main energy source.

The growth in wind power generation was aided by new offshore wind farms becoming operational. For example, the large Hornsea 2 wind farm off the British coast in the North Sea was fully commissioned in August. That wind farm can generate enough power to power approximately 1.4 million homes.

Power production from British gas-fired power stations accounted for 38.5 percent of the total last year, compared to 37.8 percent in 2021. The United Kingdom imported less energy from France due to the problems with French nuclear power stations and therefore had to generate more energy.

The United Kingdom has the ambition to be climate neutral by 2050. This requires major investments in extra wind and solar energy.
