Reuters: US Stops Granting Export Licenses for Huawei

The United States has stopped approving licenses for US companies to supply products to Chinese telecom giant Huawei. Insiders report this to the Reuters news agency.

Huawei has been struggling with export restrictions from the US for years. The Americans fear that the company is enabling espionage through back doors in its technology.

A spokesman for the US government declined to comment, stating only that officials are “constantly reviewing policies and regulations.” Huawei also declined to comment. However, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry says the US is “using national security to suppress businesses in China unreasonably”.

However, the US Department of Commerce still granted licenses to companies to sell specific goods and technologies to the company. For example, chip company Qualcomm was permitted in 2020 to supply 4G smartphone chips to Huawei.

One of the sources now states that the stricter policy will limit the supply of various goods, including the 4G chips. New permits are no longer issued for this, says another source. In addition, the supply of products that contribute to the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and supercomputers, among other things, would also be restricted.
