The traditional and well-attended New Year’s Eve fireworks display in Sydney Harbour may be cancelled due to safety concerns, Australian police said Friday.
Rail unions are threatening to take action, raising “serious concerns” for the safety of visitors, New South Wales Police Chief Karen Webb said.
“Every year on New Year’s Eve, we monitor for a quarter of a million people coming into the city and then safely leaving,” Webb said at a news conference. “Leaving the city is based on access to transportation, including trains. And if trains are unavailable and people can’t leave the city, I’m very concerned about the risk that will pose to the public.”
Police have not ruled out recommending the government cancel the fireworks. “It is so serious,” Webb said.
Earlier this week, Rail Tram and Bus union members voted to take action for better pay from December 28. New South Wales Chief Minister Chris Minns rejected the demand for an “exorbitant” pay raise.
