WSJ: Trump Not Yet Introducing New Import Duties

According to the American business newspaper The Wall Street Journal, Donald Trump, sworn in as president of the United States on Monday, will not introduce new tax rates on products from other countries on his first day at work.

Although some countries had expected and feared this, Trump first wants to understand why the US imports more products than it exports.

According to the newspaper, Trump wants federal government agencies to investigate how fair trade is between the US and other countries, with special attention to China, Canada, and Mexico. They will examine existing trade agreements and investigate whether these countries adhere to the rules. Trump also wants to determine whether other nations use their currency unfairly to gain trade advantages.

In particular, the 2020 trade deal with China and the agreements in the trade agreement between the US, Canada, and Mexico will receive extra attention. The agreements with Canada and Mexico will be re-evaluated in 2026, and Trump wants to prepare well for that.
