The wife of infamous Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera, the former leader of the Mexican Sinaloa cartel, was arrested by US authorities on Monday at an airport Virginia state.
She was arrested when she arrived in the United States via Dulles International Airport, just outside Washington, the US Department of Justice reports.
The 31-year-old woman, Emma Coronel Aispuro, is suspected of involvement in importing cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana to the US.
In addition, she allegedly cooperated in two attempts to escape her husband from a Mexican prison in 2015 and 2016. The woman must appear in court in Washington on Tuesday.
Her husband, ‘El Chapo’, is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted in February 2019 of trafficking large quantities of drugs and participating in multiple murder plots as leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of Mexico’s most violent drug organizations.
