US tech giant Apple has disabled one of its new AI applications. The function summarises current events. However, the application caused errors and a complaint from the BBC.
Apple began rolling out its generative artificial intelligence system, “Apple Intelligence,” in iOS 18 (currently in beta) this winter, two years after OpenAI released similar technology with ChatGPT. One of the new features summarizes notifications from news apps for recent Apple devices, such as the iPhone 16.
After an update on Thursday, the application is temporarily unavailable. The feature may return after improvements. In December, the feature suggested that the BBC News website had published an article stating that Luigi Mangione, suspected of murdering Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, had committed suicide.
The report was false, and the BBC had never written it. The AI had also completely misrepresented other news headlines.
Since the success of ChatGPT, Google, Microsoft, Meta, and other tech companies have been racing to deploy generative AI. The models are getting more impressive, but they are also making mistakes. For example, one version of Google’s model last year recommended that internet users use glue in pizzas.
